Chapter Fifteen

Dusty

My parents moved a couple years after I graduated high school. Once I was no longer their problem to take care of they saw no need to hang around the small town I’d grown up in and decided to move on to a bigger city; some place more deserving of their self-proclaimed stature. My father was a lawyer and my mother didn’t work, unless you count throwing expensive parties and working hard at appearing to be the example of what an excellent wife should be in front of her peers and everyone at the church she and my father attended. Attended probably isn’t the right term. My father had made a number of donations to the church, and as such basically owned the place. He loved the image it created for him, always saying that to be successful in life it was important to show the world that you were a hard-working and God-fearing man.

I let Rick know that I would be out of work for a few days, then I packed a small bag and set out to visit my mom and dad. I knew that what Mason’s mom said to me had been the truth, and if I was going to do what was right by myself and Mason I needed to start with my parents. I was certain that they would not accept what I had to tell them, accept that I am gay, but I couldn’t keep hiding who I was and expect Mason to accept my half-ass show of love in the privacy of our homes. I needed to do this for me, needed to show the people who were important in my life the real me, and then, maybe, once I had nothing else to hide and I was settled in my own skin I would be able to offer Mason something real.

Visiting my parents was not something I did often, not since they up and decided to move fourteen hours away, so it still blew my mind every time I pulled up to their house and took in the enormous place they now called home. I loved my parents, but I would never understand their need for extravagant material possessions to show off their worth. Hell, there were only two of them and this house was big enough to comfortably house an entire army. Before I left the house I called my mom to let her know I’d be coming for a visit. She had sounded so happy that I was coming to see them, and I just hoped she could maintain her upbeat attitude once I shared with them the reason for the unplanned trip.

When I knocked on the door I expected it to be my mother who opened it knowing my dad would be working this time of day, but instead a woman I’d never met opened the door wearing a black dress with a white frilly apron tied around her waist. A maid. My parents had gotten a maid.
